Friends President Julie Holland, Eike Schmidt, Director of the Uffizi Galleries, Mayor of Minneapolis Jacob Frey, and Katie Luber, Nivin and Duncan MacMillan Director and President of the Minneapolis Institute of Art

2022 has been such an exciting month for the Friends! In January, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey proclaimed January 20th “Friends of the Institute Day” and the Minneapolis 35-W Bridge was lit up in our signature Friends Blue. The proclamation was followed by our first in-person lecture in twenty-one months featuring Eike Schmidt, the director of the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, Italy.

Fast forward to February, also known as Friends February—a time when we continue to celebrate 100 years as part of the Mia family but also look forward to the future and all it holds as we continue a future of celebration and support of Mia.

March and April hold more exciting events. A Friends lecture with local artist and activist Seitu Ken Jones, a multidisciplinary artist, advocate and maker based in St. Paul takes place on March 10th and our monthly Friends-Only book club is back online and then in April, our annual ode to spring opens on April 27th with our Preview Party, as well as another Friends lecture and the Centennial Luncheon.

That’s the near future but did you know that in the recent past:

  • Our Transportation Fund has brought more than 25,000 school children to Mia in the past 10 years?
  • Art in Bloom brings over 40,000 visitors to Mia each spring?
  • The Friends have made many, many contributions to Mia’s collection, including a Delacroix painting that now hangs in Gallery 321?
  • The Friends launched the docent program as well as Art Adventure and other volunteer communities to support Mia?

We could not have built this vital organization without the thousands of members and volunteers who have shared our passion for Mia over these 100 years. And we need you to help our organization thrive. How can you help? Renew your Friends membership!

Memberships now run for the calendar year, starting in January each year. So make the most of your Friends membership in 2022 and renew today! Click HERE to renew, stop by our table at lectures, or call 612-870-6323 to sign up.

As a reminder, all Friends members in good standing will receive a beautiful hardcover copy of Friends for 100 Years: A Lasting Legacy (while supplies last) and be invited to all centennial events as well as all of our regular Friends programming like lectures, docent tours, book club and Art in Bloom!

We look forward to seeing you at Mia!

Sneak preview of the cover of the Friends commemorative centennial book.

Can you remember what you were doing at the start of 2021? Most of us were looking forward to a new year but worrying about how the pandemic would affect our beloved people and places. For the Friends, that included our members, so we asked ourselves some big questions. How would the Friends navigate this new normal? How could we be Friends through a computer screen and stay connected to Mia as this group has for 100 years?

In order to facilitate these connections, last January we gave our members a complimentary year of membership –more than 740 of you took us up on it. We hope you attended a lecture or a Friends Only event, participated in our Book Club online, and felt like Art in Bloom 2021 opened its doors to the spring sunshine (even if it was virtually).

This year, we are excited to welcome you back to our regular membership and our regular events. Today you can register and pay your annual membership fees for a full year of Friends. We are also excited to relaunch our Friends membership levels and invite you to join us for all the fun and friendship that our 100th year has to offer. Your membership allows us to continue supporting, enhancing and sustaining the collection and programs Mia has to offer.

“Friends for 100 Years,” our centennial celebration, begins with a luncheon on Thursday, January 20 immediately following our first in-person lecture in the Pillsbury Auditorium. Dr. Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Galleries in Florence, Italy will be the featured speaker. This exciting event and all Centennial events are only open for members in good standing so join us now!

All Friends in good standing (meaning those who have re-committed to paid membership) will receive a beautiful hardcover copy of Friends for 100 Years: A Lasting Legacy and be invited to special Centennial events plus all of our regular Friends programming like lectures, guided tours, book club and Art in Bloom!

Memberships will now run for the calendar year, from January through December 31. This year we are adding another incentive to our membership levels. Each member will be eligible to receive two tickets to each lecture regardless of giving amount, as well as all the wonderful benefits that a paying membership provides. Higher levels of membership will be eligible for other premiums.

Please join us, today, by clicking here and renewing your membership as the Friends begin our next 100 years.

Membership: Friends and Family

Membership Co-chair, Allison Fox Greene, Shares her Friends Membership Story.

When I moved back to Minneapolis after many years away, my mother gifted me a Friends membership. What a wonderful welcome home it was, and a fantastic way to reconnect with Mia and our amazing community of art lovers.

Do you know someone who shares your interest in the arts and is looking for ways to get involved? There has never been a better time to introduce them to The Friends! The year ahead is so full of opportunities to spend time together at Mia, from lectures to book clubs to Friends-only tours, not to mention our Centennial celebration.

Mia has always been a passion my mom and I have shared, and it is such an honor to now follow in her footsteps and serve on the Friends board. Perhaps you can spark a Friends legacy in your family as well.

This year membership is taking a NEW approach. We are starting all memberships and all renewals on January 1.

Next month, all members will receive a reminder to renew their membership for the 2022 membership year, so this might be a great time to think about which of your family members and/or friends could also become your Friends!

If you have any questions about membership, please email us at friendsmembership@artsmia.org. We look forward to hearing from you!

Membership is the theme of this month’s fabulous newsletter, and it is SO important to the Friends. As a member, your time, your attention and hard work have brought so many wonderful things to Mia! From yellow school bus grants that transport children to Mia to art acquisitions like the Delacroix, our members have volunteered and donated to make Mia a special part of our Minnesota home.

While we have enjoyed many years of growing Friends members, in recent years we have seen a slow reversal in renewals and new memberships.

The membership committee is developing new and innovative ways to retain existing members and to reach out to new members as well as to convert friends into Friends. But we need your help too.

How can YOU help?

Two Friends, Frogtown, 1994 Wing Young Huie Gelatin silver print GIFT OF FUNDS FROM DAVID PARKER 98.228.2

Not sure if your membership has lapsed? Call the Mia Member’s Hotline at 612-870-6323 to find out when your membership expires. If your membership has expired you can renew it at the same time.
