The Submission by Amy Waldman is the first book up for discussion in this Friends-Only group
Join bookish Friends on Friday, September 14 at 10:30AM in Studio Classroom 114 for a stimulating docent tour and thought-provoking discussion of Amy Waldman’s fictional novel The Submission.
In Amy Waldman’s first novel, the former New York Times reporter leads us through the repercussions that result when a selection committee chooses a Muslim-American architect for a ground zero-type memorial from all of the anonymously submitted designs.
New York Times book reviewer Michiko Kakutani wrote, “Writing in limber, detailed prose, Ms. Waldman has created a choral novel with a big historical backdrop and pointillist emotional detail, a novel that gives the reader a visceral understanding of how New York City and the country at large reacted to 9/11, and how that terrible day affected some Americans’ attitudes toward Muslims and immigrants.”
The group will go on a docent-guided tour at 10:30am, followed by a moderator-led discussion in Studio 114. Light refreshments accompanied by coffee, tea, and water will be available as well.
There is no need to reserve a spot.
Additionally, mark Friday, October 12 on your calendar for a docent tour and subsequent moderator-led discussion of Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor.
On Friday, November 16, the Mia Friends Book Club will discuss Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson.
